For Knots That Will Not Shift

Deep Tissue Massage
in Yarm

Firm, patient, targeted pressure through the deeper layers of muscle where back and shoulder pain actually lives. 60 minutes for £50, or a focused 30 minute back treatment for £30.

The Difference

Slower and firmer, not simply harder

Deep tissue massage is often misunderstood as a relaxation massage with the volume turned up. It is not. The difference is intent. Rather than flowing across the whole body, your therapist works into specific bands of muscle and fascia, holding pressure on a knot until it genuinely releases instead of gliding past it.

That means fewer strokes, applied more slowly, with thumbs, knuckles, forearms and elbows depending on the depth needed. You will be asked to breathe out as pressure goes in, because a held breath keeps a muscle guarded. It should feel intense but entirely bearable. Sharp pain is not the objective, and a therapist who ignores that is doing it wrong.

Our therapists come from a Thai massage background, which gives deep tissue work a different quality here. They are used to treating a painful shoulder as part of a chain running through the neck, ribs and opposite hip, so you tend to get the whole pattern addressed rather than 15 minutes of digging at a spot.

What It Treats

The problems guests bring to this treatment

Lower back pain

The single most common reason people book. Work through the lumbar area, glutes and hip flexors usually achieves more than treating the sore spot alone.

Neck and trapezius tension

The ridge between neck and shoulder that turns to stone by Thursday. A guest books monthly purely for her tense trapezius muscles.

Sciatic type discomfort

Tightness deep in the glutes and hamstrings can refer pain down the leg. Releasing it often eases the whole line, though genuine nerve issues need your GP 1st.

Training plateaus and DOMS

Gym goers, runners and cyclists use deep tissue to clear stubborn quads, calves and lats so they can keep training rather than resting up.

Manual and trade work strain

Builders, drivers, hairdressers and warehouse staff carry asymmetric load all week. Deep tissue targets the side that takes the most.

Old injuries that never fully settled

Long-standing scar tissue and compensation patterns respond to patient, repeated deep work more than to a single relaxing session.

Your Appointment

How the session is structured

Come 5 minutes early and show your therapist exactly where the problem is. Be specific: which movement hurts, how long it has been there, whether it is worse in the morning. That conversation shapes the whole hour.

Underwear is kept on at all times and you are never fully undressed. Towels cover you throughout, with only the area being worked uncovered, and your therapist leaves the room while you settle onto the bed.

She will warm the tissue 1st with broader strokes, because going straight to depth on a cold guarded muscle is both unpleasant and ineffective. Pressure then builds progressively. Expect to be asked how it feels, and answer honestly. Around 7 out of 10 on a discomfort scale is the useful zone.

Afterwards, drink water and expect mild next-day soreness like the day after the gym. By day 2 most guests notice clearly freer movement.

Choosing Between Them

Deep tissue, Thai, or hot stone?

Deep tissue when you can point at the problem. Concentrated pressure, 1 or 2 areas, real change in a specific place.

Traditional Thai when you feel generally stiff and compressed rather than locally sore. The authentic technique practised in Thailand. Your therapist uses palms, thumbs and forearms to apply rhythmic acupressure along the Sen energy lines, combined with assisted yoga-style stretches. Oil can be used if requested. Best for stiffness, restricted movement and desk-bound bodies — it's as much about mobility as relaxation. £50 for the hour.

Hot stone when you want deep release but dislike heavy pressure. Heat softens the muscle so less force achieves the same depth, £65 for the hour.

If you are not sure, ring 07301 158604 and describe the ache. We will tell you honestly which treatment to book, including when the answer is the cheaper option.
